Our Story
Born in Toledo, Ohio, Derek J picked up his first pair of shears at 17. What started as cosmetology school turned into a calling — he relocated to Atlanta, attended the International School of Skin, Nailcare & Massage Therapy, and began building his name through editorial work while still in school.
His early reputation was built on magazine shoots — Essence, Vibe, Black Men's Magazine, Today's Black Woman — with a client roster that grew to include Beyoncé, Serena Williams, and Nicole Ari Parker, who told him: "You are a brand."
In 2007, he entered the Bronner Brothers Hair Battle — and won. The competition was being filmed for Chris Rock's Good Hair, now standard curriculum in cosmetology schools nationwide. That win put Derek on TV producers' radar and started a run that hasn't stopped.
The J Spot's original home was in Buckhead on Bennett St NW. When the Atlanta Beltline acquired that corridor, Derek relocated the salon east to 805 Lambert Dr NE, Suite E — a space built for the team he'd assembled.
